How to choose a laptop backpack for your commute
A laptop backpack has two jobs: protect the computer and carry everything else without feeling like luggage. Getting the fit right starts with a tape measure.
Measure the laptop, not the screen
Laptop sizes such as “15-inch” describe the screen diagonal. The body of the laptop is what has to fit the sleeve, and bodies vary between brands and models.
Measure your laptop’s width, depth and thickness, and include any case you keep it in. When a bag lists a sleeve size, only trust the fit that is written on the product.
Capacity in liters
Backpack capacity is measured in liters. Smaller daypacks suit a laptop, charger and a few essentials; larger packs add room for a jacket, lunch or gym kit.
More volume is not always better for a commute. A pack that is mostly empty lets things shift and can feel bulkier on a crowded train.
Pockets and straps
Look for the features you will use every day rather than the longest feature list.
- A separate padded laptop sleeve keeps the computer from sharing space with keys and bottles.
- A front pocket keeps small items reachable without opening the main compartment.
- Padded shoulder straps spread the load when the bag is full.
