Guide
How to care for a wool or cotton-blend coat
A good coat should last several winters. Most of that comes from what you do between cleanings, not from how often you dry clean it.
After every wear
Hang the coat on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their form. Thin wire hangers leave bumps in the shoulders.
Let it air out overnight before you put it in a closed wardrobe. Moisture from rain or body heat needs to escape.
Brush, do not wash
A soft clothes brush lifts dust and lint from wool and cotton blends. Brush downward, in the direction of the fabric, once a week in heavy use.
For a small mark, dab with a cloth dampened in cool water. Do not rub; rubbing spreads the stain and can felt wool.
When to dry clean
The listing shows its coats as dry clean. Once or twice a season is usually enough, or after a stain you cannot lift with water. Frequent dry cleaning wears fabric faster.
Always follow the care label on the coat itself. If the label and this guide disagree, the label wins.
End-of-season storage
- Clean the coat before storing it. Moths and stains are drawn to soiled fabric.
- Store it in a breathable cotton garment bag, not plastic.
- Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths in wool.
